Why Pigeons Move In Under Solar Panels

The gap between your roof and your panels is close to perfect for a pigeon: shaded in summer, sheltered from wind and rain, and out of reach of predators. Once a pair settles in, others tend to follow, and the space fills with nesting material and droppings.

That causes real problems. The noise starts at dawn. Droppings land on the panels, where they shade cells and don't rinse off with rain, and pile up in gutters, on patios and around the edges of the roof. Nesting debris collects under the array. Squirrels and rats can use the same gap, and chewed wiring is a common worry for solar owners.

How Our Bird Proofing Works

1. Free inspection. We check every side of the array, photograph any nesting or droppings, and measure the exposed edge that needs to be closed off.
2. Written price. You get a firm number before any work starts, based on the linear feet of exposed edge.
3. Clean-out & panel wash. Light nest and debris removal from under the array is included, plus a full solar panel wash.
4. Mesh installation. A wire mesh barrier is fitted around the exposed edges of the array so birds can't get back underneath.
5. Before & after photos. Same as every job, you get photos so you can see the finished work without climbing on the roof.

How the math works: if your array has 80 feet of exposed edge, that's 80 × $10 = $800, panel wash included. A small array with 45 feet of exposed edge would come to $450, so the $599 minimum applies. On a two-story home, add $125. Edges that sit tight against a wall or another roof plane may not need mesh, and we only charge for the edge that does.

Bird Proofing FAQs

Is the free inspection really free?

Yes. We look at your array, document any nesting and droppings with photos, measure the exposed edge, and give you a written price. There's no charge and no obligation.

Will mesh hurt the birds?

No. Mesh is an exclusion barrier: it simply blocks the gap under the panels so birds can't get back in. If we find an active nest with eggs or chicks, we'll talk with you about timing before sealing anything off.

Does mesh affect how my panels work?

The mesh goes around the outside edge of the array, not over the glass, and it's open so air still moves under the panels. During the inspection we'll show you exactly where and how it attaches. If you have questions about your specific warranty, it's worth checking with your installer too.

Can you clean my panels at the same visit?

Yes, it's already included. Every bird proofing job comes with a full solar panel wash, because droppings on the glass shade cells and don't rinse off with rain. There's no separate cleaning charge.

What if the infestation is heavy?

Light nest and debris cleanout is included. For a heavy infestation (an active colony or deep droppings under the array), the extra cleanup is typically +$150 to $300, quoted after the inspection so you know the price before any work starts.
